Homework

I am pleased to provide you with this guide about homework at Queensbury School. As a reminder, the key purposes of homework are:

  • to raise student achievement and promote good progress in learning
  • to provide opportunities for students to work independently, to take responsibility for organising their work and to develop perseverance, self discipline and study skills
  • to check that students have understood class work by reinforcing skills and consolidating knowledge and understanding
  • to prepare for future lessons
  • to extend curriculum time to enable the National Curriculum and GCSE course work to be covered

Please note that, throughout the year, it is quite normal that project work, revision, learning, research and extended tasks will be set across the range of subjects. As a result, some homework assignments will be set for longer periods of time, requiring more than one week.

As a guide, the time that should be spent on homework for the different year groups is:

Year 7 and 8 3-7 hours per week

Year 9 5-10 hours per week

Year 10 and 11 8-13 hours per week

Year 12 and 13 12-15 hours per week plus self study time

All students should note any homework set in their planner

Should you have any general questions about the homework timetable, please contact your child’s Head of Year. Questions of a subject-specific nature regarding homework should be addressed to your child’s subject teacher, or the Director of Learning of that subject area
